  5. disciple of the pragmatist philosopher John Dewey at Columbia
  6. University and a faculty member there for 42 years, Hook, a Marxist
  7. scholar, was among the earliest critics of Stalinism. His
  8. opposition to extremism in any form was a major theme in his 1987
  9. autobiography, Out of Step: An Unquiet Life in the 20th Century.
